The latest news is super sweet: The Meridian Baby and Child collection is here! Featuring handmade and Fair Trade items, our line of chic nursery essentials has everything you need for the next generation of global citizens.
The idea started several years ago when our founder, Ashley Viola, was looking to outfit her son’s nursery with a global feel. Ashley struggled to find items that were sophisticated and well-traveled but also safe and respectful of their origins and the environment. Flash forward a few years later and the newest collection was hatched!
The collection features Fair Trade items sourced from several countries including Peru, Turkey, Kenya and Guatemala. We went the extra length to ensure every product is using the highest quality natural materials. Everything has been designed to last a lifetime.
Knit Animals From Peru
Our adorable line of stuffed animals is made by hand in the Peruvian highlands by a Fair Trade women’s cooperative. Our partners provide the opportunity for artisans from farming communities to generate supplemental income by creating these cute and cuddly dolls. The organization also provides job training and technical support to grow their expertise, empowering the artisans for sustainable work.
Each precious animal in the collection – including Bette the Bunny, Luca the Lion, Murray the Monkey and Zella the Zebra – has been knit, loomed, and embroidered by hand using locally sourced materials such as cotton and alpaca. After a prototype has been established by our partner’s master weaver and the Meridian development team, they share the pattern with the artisans who are located in the remote Andes mountains. It takes about two full days on average to create one stuffed animal, which the women make using traditional knitting techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Waffle Throws From Turkey
We looked to Turkey to perfect this special Waffle Throw for our first baby blanket. Hand-loomed by a group of women in the South East of Turkey, each blanket features a special waffle-weave texture and stitched hem. Our collection is produced in a Fair Trade and family-owned business that has been weaving for multiple generations.
These throws are perfectly sized for tummy time, but also are large enough to function as a nursing cover or bedtime snuggle accessory. Not too heavy but more substantial than an airy muslin blanket, they are the perfect weight to get cozy, no matter the season.
Sisal Nesting Baskets From Kenya
There is more to the complete nursery than tiny socks and diaper genies. Organization is key, and these sisal nesting baskets are the perfect accompaniment for sorting toys, changing table necessities, or whatever else finds its way into the baby’s room.
This set of three nesting sisal baskets has been handmade in Eastern Kenya by a Fair Trade women’s cooperative. The craft of sisal weaving is indigenous to their village, and the group has been passing the knowledge down through multiple generations.
The women of the cooperative work together to produce the baskets as well as bags and other sisal items. They love to encourage each other in work and life by teaching the younger women how to weave, helping others to perfect designs, and also taking care of those in the community who are in need.
Limited Edition Lovies From Thailand
These stuffed animals from Thailand were just too cute to pass up, even though we only have a few in very limited quantities! They are handmade by a Fair Trade non-profit group in Vietnam that is dedicated to the preservation of traditional crafts and the artisans’ cultural heritage.
Each animal is hand sewn by women from traditional villages using hand spun, natural cotton. Details on each animal include pieces of traditional indigo batik.
Our partners work with Vietnamese artisans who are specifically from ethnic minorities groups or are those with disabilities. The organization provides skill training, interest-free loans, and educational opportunities to its members.
Global Textiles That Give Back
We’re loving the mix of worldly textiles – especially Guatemalan Huipil pillows – to complete the global nursery look. Each one is unique and one-of-a-kind, just like your little one. Plus, we give back a percentage with every purchase to an organization that provides family services and healthcare to mothers in Guatemala.
We’ll be adding more to the Meridian Baby and Child Collection in the coming months! Make sure you’re on our mailing list to hear about our newest arrivals.
